The magnificent Wildwood Garden opens this weekend. Take a drive up to Bilpin where this beautiful garden is filled with flowers and the Autumn colour is starting. Open 10am -4pm Friday - Monday. While away the time taking in the sights and smells making sure you browse in the gift shop and relax in the café.

It’s chestnut season so head to stunning Mount Irvine to Nutwood Farm and Kookootonga Nut Farm for some family fun picking your own chestnuts and walnuts. Both are open Saturday and Sunday 9am-4pm. While you’re in the area why not visit an orchard or two for some apple picking to fill the baskets.

Omie Tapa: Bark Cloths from PNG

Omie Tapa: Bark Cloths from PNG

Saturday 23 March 2024 Free

Event details

The first exhibition for the year celebrates the unique and dynamic tapa (bark cloth) art movement of the Ömie people of Papua New Guinea. Each piece is painted on the base tapa in many different coloured organic dyes made from leaves, seeds, bark, roots, sap and fruit, that are mixed with water and/or ash. They are iconographic and diverse, enlivening and transformative - simply exquisite.
The small remote Omie community lives high on the southern flank of PNG's volcanic Mt Lamington ('Havaemo') near Kokoda in Oro Province. Beaten bark cloth textiles - tapa (known as nioge by the Omie) is the primary artistic medium for Omie and fundamental to recording, preserving and expressing all aspects of Ömie cultural heritage. Although these days western-sytle clothing is used for everyday wear, nioge continue to be worn as skirts, shawls and loincloths for all dancing and singing, and ceremonial occasions.
