What's On in the Hawkesbury

As restrictions slowly start to ease we now find ourselves looking for things to do whilst being able to follow social distancing regulations. For some great ideas check out what’s on in the Hawkesbury this weekend.

Hawkesbury Regional Gallery re-opens this Saturday with the major exhibition Fieldwork, which is being toured by the Art Gallery of NSW. This exhibition includes significant and seldom-seen paintings and major works on paper from the AGNSW's collection. There is a focus on plein air (open air) painting at artist camps and on excursions to areas such as the Hawkesbury River, Blue Mountains and Sydney's western suburbs.

This Saturday pop into Richmond Good Food Markets located in Richmond Park. This market is a great place to stock up on fresh food, produce and a bite to eat. Open from 8am-1pm. Sunday visit the popular Windsor Mall Markets located in George Street Mall Windsor. A great place to purchase crafts, candles, preserves, honey and more. Spend the day and enjoy lunch at one of the many cafes or bring a picnic and sit by the river at Macquarie Park or Governor Phillip Park.

Visit the Australiana Pioneer Village this Sunday.  Set on 28 acres the Village offers beautiful picnic areas with BBQ facilities and plenty of room to play. Explore the historic village, ride on the mini train, feed the animals and enjoy a hay ride. This heritage listed open air museum has something for the whole family. The Village will also open Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the school holidays with Science and Nature themed fun.

It's a perfect time to head out for a bushwalk. Take a look at the new selection of walks featured on our trending page or pick up a copy of the Best Bushwalks in the Hawkesbury only $6 and available for purchase at the Hawkesbury Regional Museum, Baker St, Windsor.

We are excited to  be able to welcome visitors to our beautiful Hawkesbury region as more business start to re-open.

Although our Hawkesbury Visitor Information Centre at 328 Hawkesbury Valley Way, Richmond is currently closed due to renovations you can still reach out to us by telephone (02) 4560 4620, email discover@hawkesbury.nsw.gov.au, Instagram or Facebook.  We are always happy to try and assist!

Exhibition runs Saturday 18July - Sunday 20 September Saturday 18 July 2020 Free

Event details

We are excited to be reopening the Gallery's doors with the major exhibition Fieldwork, which is being toured by the Art Gallery of NSW.
This exhibition includes significant and seldom-seen paintings and major works on paper from the AGNSW's collection, by prominent artists including Hilda Rix Nicholas, Julian Ashton, Elioth Gruner, JJ Hilder, Sydney Long and Charles Meere.
A highlight is Elioth Gruner's painting Spring frost 1919. This iconic and much-loved painting has rarely been taken of the walls of the Art Gallery NSW, and we are one of only three regional galleries to welcome it into our communities.
The exhibition includes other treasures from the Gallery's collection that depict landscapes west of Sydney between the late-19th to the mid-20th centuries.
There is a focus on plein air (open air) painting at artist camps and on excursions to areas such as the Hawkesbury River, Blue Mountains and Sydney's western suburbs.

Sidestepping Spinifex: Ellen King

As a feltmaker with particular interest in wearable art and 3D sculptural form, Ellen creates texture, movement and depth of colour in her pieces. Inspired by her travels to the northern parts of Australia, where the wide Drysdale River weaves its way through a spikey spinifex dotted landscape, Ellen used the visual memory of these rocky outcrops and jump-up  plateaus to envision a translation into her felting. The result is truly awe-inspiring, reflecting on, and translating, her experiences and connections to the beauty of nature in a more abstract way.

Evening Birdsong: Irene Manion

Since retiring from Visual Arts teaching, Irene has devoted her time exclusively to her art practice. Textiles enticed her from the beginning, and after developing skills in a range of techniques, she has most recently specialised in working with machine and hand embroidery on digitally transfer-printed polyester fabrics, presented for this exhibition on Perspex panels. These are based on Irene's minimalist bird photographs, watercolours and ink paintings, which also feature in the exhibition.
