The essential buy !

We all love the warm weather! Unfortunately so do our snake friends. Don’t let that make you run back inside and hide. Just think ahead and be prepared if one ever takes you or your loved ones by surprise.

While it’s not the usual souvenir you’d expect to see in the Hawkesbury Visitor Information Centre we’ve sold hundreds of snake bite kits to Hawkesbury locals and visitors alike.

Never fear we still have the more anticipated goodies available (great books, guides maps and local produce) in Centre too!

The kit available is produced and distributed by the Australian company Equip and costs only $23. The kit includes:

• an emergency action card and detailed snake bite first aid instructions (so you know what to do),
• two heavy compression bandages including one with compression indicators (to bandage bite),
• two triangle bandages(slings and immobilisation).

People come from far and wide and all walks of life to acquire their snake bite kits. Farmers and tradies purchase them to have ready in each of their vehicles; bushwalkers have added them to the day packs, and many have been purchased as an addition to first aid kits in homes, vehicles, caravans, RVs, and businesses throughout the state. That’s right, we can mail them Australia wide for a flat cost of $7. They also make great practical gifts for those people who already have everything.

At least one of our snake bite kits possibly did save a life – one customer called in to get another after using her original kit when her dog was bitten last summer. The pooch was treated on site with the kit, transported to the vet for treatment and recovered. While we do hope there won’t ever be a need for its use, it is reassuring to know our customers are prepared in case of snake and spider bite.
